Join us once again as we take a walk on the wrong side of the tracks as we look back at the history of Grand Theft Auto!
Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories (2005) PlayStation PortableThe year prior, RockStar had a lot of success with bringing GTA to the GameBoy Advance. But with the far more powerful, PlayStation Portable they had the chance to bring as close to the console experience as possible to a handheld. Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories was the most anticipated game on the PSP. It was a game that many people actually bought the handheld just to play.
The story of the game sees you playing as Toni Cipriani, who as you have probably guessed is a mobster who is trying to work his way up the ranks, seek revenge and make as much money as possible. The story is actually pretty well done and it is set before the events of Grand Theft Auto III.
While the story is fun, the gameplay is the real star here. RockStar did a fantastic job with this game and it really does come close to matching what the console GTA games offered, all be it in a bit of a smaller scale. While this is based on GTA III. Liberty City Stories has more in common with the later games in the series, Vice City, and San Andreas as it gives the player more control over the camera, more indoor areas to explore and many of the vehicles that those two games offered. It even had a fun multiplayer mode which at the time was a huge deal.
In all Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories was a huge success it was fun to play, sold a ton of copies and was very well received. It would actually be ported to the PlayStation 2 the following year and also end up on mobile devices in 2016.
You may think the title of today’s blog is kind of weird as Battlefront II is not actually here yet, but we are not talking about Star Wars Battlefront II that is coming out in November and getting its beta later this week. But the original Star Wars Battlefront II from 2005!
How crazy is this? It has been announced that GOG and Steam are doing some kind of team up and players who have the game on Steam can play against those who purchased it on GOG. It has been a very long time since the Battlefront II servers were shut down, but we are sure people will be very excited about this as Battlefront II had a ton of content.
Now the bad news is that this is for PC players only. So those of us who have the game on Xbox or PlayStation 2 are out of luck. To be fair it would be near impossible for the old consoles to get back online. But it is still really awesome how Disney has brought this back for PC players.
We have even heard some people say that this is a very good thing. Not just because Star Wars Battlefront II is awesome. But because if successful, it could mean that they might consider bringing back some of the other older Star Wars games and bringing them online as well.
As you can tell, here at Mods “R” Us, we could not be any more excited for Star Wars Battlefront II (we mean the new one!) and getting the beta this week, plus the chance to play the original Battlefront II just adds to that excitement.
